When you think of summer hair, chances are your mind immediately imagines carefree beachy waves and fuss-free updos. While summer certainly is a time to go low-maintenance, it’s also a season full of social gatherings and new beginnings - which both call for great hair.
So instead of relying on your failsafe hairstyles this summer, up your mane game and bring a little glamour back into your hair routine.
We asked leading hairstylist Anthony Nader from RAW Salon to reveal Australia’s top summer hair trends for 2022 to inspire your new year look.
The Lived-In Deep Side Part Blowout
The hair trend: It's time to move your part waaay to the side while adding body through the lengths. But instead of a perfectly smooth finish, take your cue from your hair's natural wave for a lived-in feel. “Embrace the full swing of the '90s and dress up your night from day in a matter of minutes while having a fresh summer cocktail,” says Anthony.
Styling advice: “You don't need to stretch and burn your strands here as you want your hair shape to look more one to two days old rather than #JerryHall-ish, if you get my drift a-beauty readers!”
In your toolkit: “Your prep product is the key here for your glam hair to last the distance, so always prep with either a plumping foam or sea salt spray in damp hair and then blow-dry in.
Anthony’s top tip: “Invest in a beautiful large round barrel brush and roll strands from roots to ends so the blow-dry will last longer. Also, make sure you create a strict clean deep side part as this will add that extra understated glam.”
“Lastly, add a signature cute side clip tucked behind one ear, and then you're good to go.”

Choppy Summer Bangs
The hair trend: Think of this look as beachy bangs with plenty of texture and undone movement. Anthony adds, “This look is perfect for those of you who still want to throw your mane up in a top knot after a swim but still want some fun happening in the front.”
Why you’ll love it: “Summer bangs are the perfect ingredient for girls who want a change but don't want to commit to having a bob.
What to ask your hairdresser for: “Make your bangs a statement and ask your hairdresser for something bolder than wispy this summer!”
Anthony’s top tip: “I personally like to cut my clients bangs in on the longer side rather than too short. Too short is not only vibing preschool days when your mum maybe cut your hair in the kitchen but it can also tend to look more aggressive. Make your bangs choppy and soft…this is the key and will also grow out like a breeze.”
Styling advice: “If you want to keep your new summer bangs polished and neat, blast-dry with a narrow nozzle attached to the end of your hairdryer and use a comb as this will tame any unruly hair texture.”
The Chainmail Updo
The hair trend: Edgy hair accessories are having a moment this season and are the easiest way to change up your look without any effort or commitment. “The most perfect and timeless updo that I love to recreate is adding extra sparkle to a hairstyle that I know isn't going to be seen at the same party,” says Anthony. “There's so much fun you can create using unused trinkets of jewellery that you may have lying around stashed in a drawer.”
How to get the look: “Plan your hair shape, whether it's a rope braid/plait or a bun of any height; choose your piece of jewellery; and entwine that throughout your crafty handiwork and then secure with bobby pins.”
Why you’ll love it: “A piece of jewellery adds that extra special something to a hairstyle that you didn't think would get your girlfriends totally envious.”
Anthony’s top tip: “For best results, skip the washing your hair as that well-earned beach dip was very intentional for your hair prep.”
